Gerald comes a-courting at St Augustines Farm

Princess the pig lay in her muddy wallow dreaming of her prince when suddenly a gorgeous hulk appeared. Gerald the Boar had arrived!

Princess the Gloucester Old Spot sow is one of the pigs that lives in the Pig Paddocks at St Augustines Farm. Her daughters are in the paddock next door and two Kune Kune pigs also live nearby.

Recently an Old Spot boar visited the the farm and is now living with the farms sows. Princess was very possessive of her paddock when Gerald arrived and bossed him about no end (Sound familiar?) but now he is accepted and shares her meals and cuddles up in the sty with him at night.

“To start with he spent a lot of the day sleeping like most men “ said one of the farm staff “but now he is more active and we expect the patter of tiny trotters in October.”

The weather has been very hot and as pigs can not sweat, Gerald the boar likes to spend the middle of the day in the muddy wallow keeping cool, some times on his own and sometimes with his Princess.

RAF AND AIR TATTOO TEAM UP FORFLAGSHIP BATTLE OF BRITAIN TRIBUTE

Dogfights, a stirring international flypast and a moving ‘missing man’ formation of aircraft are among a string of memorable set pieces being planned by organisers of the Royal International Air Tattoo and the Royal Air Force, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in July.

A wide range of historic aircraft, including Hurricanes, Spitfires and Messerschmitts, will join many of their modern-day equivalents for a unique aerial commemoration at RAF Fairford on July 17-18.

A dramatic flypast of modern aircraft representing many of the nations that took part in the historic conflict will form the centrepiece of tributes in the air whilst on the ground, a Battle of Britain airfield will be recreated, bringing to life the atmosphere during Britain’s ‘finest hour’. Visitors to the Battle of Britain Village will be invited to step back in time as re-enactors recreate the sights and sounds of England in 1940, complete with a static display of historic aircraft, military vehicles and period entertainment.

A team from the Royal Air Force has been working alongside Air Tattoo organisers to stage the RAF’s flagship commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain this summer.

Military chiefs from many of the countries that took part in the Battle of Britain will be attending, including France, Germany and Italy, along with veterans including Wing Commander Bob Foster, Chairman of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association.

Air Tattoo Chief executive Tim Prince said it was important that the ‘international’ aspect of the Battle of Britain was not overlooked.

“Many people believe the Battle of Britain was fought simply between people from two nations - England and Germany - but pilots and aircrew from 17 nations took part in total. We believe the bravery and sacrifice of all those who took part should be recognised.”

The Air Tattoo, which is held in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, is Europe’s largest airshow and attracts around 300 aircraft from across the globe. This summer’s event will feature a range of exciting aircraft including the Red Arrows, a US Air Force F-22 Raptor and an RAF Harrier. In addition to the seven-and-a-half hour flying display, visitors can enjoy a large static aircraft park plus a wide range of ground-based activities including a concert stage, fairground rides, and the interactive Tri@RIAT area for youngsters. All under-16s go free and parking is free. For ticket details, visit www.airtattoo.com

CELEBRATE THE DIVERSITY OF TREES AT WESTONBIRT
Westonbirt Arboretum's Festival of the Tree, 23 - 30 August 2010

From 23 to 30 August, Westonbirt - the National Arboretum, which is managed by the Forestry Commission, will welcome 12 talented sculptors, host over 130 craftspeople and offer tree-discovering family activities as part of its signature summer event, the Festival of the Tree.

The sculptors will take up their chainsaws and chisels for 'Sculptree' element of the festival, which sees around 24 tonnes of sustainably felled wood recycled from the Westonbirt estate transformed into elegant works of art.

The finished pieces will be auctioned on bank holiday Monday in support of Tree Aid, the UK's only forestry-based development charity. Using money raised from the Sculptree auctions, Tree Aid enables communities in Africa to work with their environments to become self reliant and fight poverty.

Returning to the event this year is Stroud-based sculptor Dan Hunt, whose stag beetle creation 'Massive Attack' broke auction records in 2009 and sold for £6,200.

From Friday 27 to Bank Holiday Monday, stalls stacked with crafts, furniture, sculpture and jewellery will fill the site to create the festival's Exhibitree woodcrafts weekend. Family activities, trails, tree team demonstrations and woodworking workshops will take place and some of the country's best craftspeople will gather to demonstrate their skills.

During the weeklong celebration of trees, family activities and Westonbirt's very own 'Laboratree' tipi will explore the 2010 International Year of Diversity. For the first time, kids go free during August, giving the perfect excuse for families to visit and find how trees, like people, are all different from one another.

The Festival of the Tree is open from 9am-5pm. From 23 to 26 August, admissions are adults £8, concessions £7 and children go free (18 years and under). From Friday 27 August to bank holiday Monday, adult admission is £10, concessions £9 and children go free. Visit www.forestry.gov.uk/westonbirt for more information.

Westonbirt Arboretum is three miles south west of Tetbury on the A433 (Tetbury to Bath Road).  It is 10 miles north east of Junction 18 of the M4, and south-east of junction 13 of the M5.

Painswick Playgroup, Churchill Way, Painswick, Gloucestershire, GL6 6RQ Tel: (01452) 813316

We are a charity run group and are currently fund-raising to build a canopy in our outside play area, to enable the children to "free play" outside in any weather. The British weather is well known for being unpredictable, and this is what we are trying to counteract! By covering just a small part of our outside area the children will be able to play outside safely on those days when it has been raining on the way in but the sun is blazing by mid-day and vice versa. It is our hope that with your help we can raise as much money as possible as canopies don't come cheap!

Painswick Town Hall from 7-10pm.

Come and browse a variety of stalls including Jewellery,

Forever Living Aloe Vera products, Fashion items, purses and scarfs, Soaps and scents, Candles, Olive oils, Cup cakes, Cotswold puddings, Cheeses, Wines, and Local Cordials .
