Time-saving Lunchbox Tips

 With new school term starting, some parents become quite anxious about the thought of starting their children on packed lunches if they are attending school for the first time. Even parents with older children who are used to the routine of packed lunches often dread this addition to the day.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of packing the same old basics into your child’s lunch box each day, and the reliance on pre-packed junk food which often seems to creep in. The risk is your child will become bored of the same old sandwiches, and may not eat enough to get them through their busy school day.

To add variety to lunch boxes, and also save you some valuable preparation time, buy in different types of bread and rolls and freeze them. This way you will have a wide variety of tasty breads and rolls on hand so sandwiches will never be the same every day. Did you know that you can also save a huge amount of time by preparing all your sandwiches for the whole week on a Sunday, and then freezing these down for use throughout the week.

Don’t worry - your sandwiches will not become soggy by freezing them if you use the best fillings that also freeze well.

Sandwich fillings that DO freeze well:

Sliced cooked meat, such as chicken, ham, beef and turkey, fish such as tuna, prawns and salmon, peanut butter, and cheese spreads with or without herbs.

Sandwich fillings that do not freeze well:

Make sure you don’t add any salad items such as tomatoes,lettuce, cucumber or grated carrot to your sandwiches before freezing. Although cream cheese freezes very well, salad dressings such as mayonnaise and salad cream do not.

If you want to add salad items to your sandwiches, then pop these into a small container to add to the sandwich later. You don’t have to thaw the sandwiches out before packing them into the lunch box as they will thaw during the morning and will be cool and fresh by lunch.

If you have a large plastic container with a lid that you can fit into your freezer, then you can make up a whole range of different sandwiches on a Sunday, pack them into the container, then each morning take out the ones that you would like for that day and add to your lunchbox - simple! If you don’t have a container, wrap your sandwiches up in cling-film, stick on a label telling you what the contents are, and add a date. Make sure you use up your frozen sandwiches within two weeks.

Although ready-made cakes look appealing with all their fancy packaging, and seem to be reasonably priced, do you know exactly what goes into them? It can be far more cost-effective and healthy to make up a batch of your own cookies, which can be frozen and added to the lunchbox.

 Home Made Fruit Cookies:

100g butter, 100g cream cheese, 100g caster sugar, 75g plain flour, 50g chopped dried fruit of your choice (apricots, raisins or cherries etc.) 65g chocolate chips.

Cream together the butter and cream cheese until smooth. Add the sugar and beat well. Stir in the flour bit by bit until well mixed, then add the chopped fruit and chocolate chips.

Drop small spoonfuls of the mixture onto non-stick baking trays and bake at 180c/350f/Gas mark 4 for about 15 minutes until golden. Leave to cool and they will harden as they cool down.

Move to a wire rack until completely cold. Pack into plastic freezer bags and freeze.

You told us that you love coming to school, and we can see why. You go to a brilliant school where you learn very quickly and leave with standards much higher than we usually see. You really like the interesting and fun tasks that your teachers give you, so you work hard and concentrate very well on your work. It doesn’t matter if you find learning easy or hard, there is always someone there to help you or to push you so that you always do as well as you can. The marking in Years 4, 5 and 6 is fantastic.

It tells you exactly what you need to do to improve your work. You also know a great deal about how to get on with other people and how to help them. We were very impressed by the things you do in the village and further afield. You rightfully feel very safe and well cared for.

You have lots of extra things to do at school, and we were especially impressed by the gardening and cooking you do. Actually, we were rather envious of the amazing vegetables you grow!

Even though your school is outstanding, the people who run it still want to make it even better. They are exceptionally good at finding out what could be improved and then doing something about it. Everyone involved with the school is working together to provide the best possible education for you, not just in school but also by taking you to see how others live their lives in England and making contact with others around the world.

As the new school year starts it's a great time to change your child's bad eating habits and get them more accustomed to a healthy lifestyle. You can start this by making good choices about what you pack in their lunchbox.

In the beginning don't make the changes to radical, but make sure to include some healthy food that is as appealing and tasty as possible. Your goal should be for your child to not even notice he's eating food that's good for him.

When putting together the lunchbox make sure that there are snacks and drinks for each break. Eating snacks between meals, or instead of meals, contrary to public opinion, is very healthy. Snaking helps reduce the amount of food we eat in one sitting, and most significantly having 5 to 6 small meals instead of three big ones, helps to keep our blood sugar level constant.

More frequent smaller meals also aid in maintaining a healthy body weight and balance our body's chemistry. Additionally eating regularly lowers levels of unhealthy cholesterol blood fats.

What to pack in your child's lunchbox:

Sandwiches Stick to health bread, whole-wheat or rye, with bagels and rolls for a change.

Fruit Pack a different fruit each day to maintain a variety.

Nuts, dried fruit and seeds Include a handful of roasted seeds, some of their favorite nuts and perhaps dried fruit for a change.

Salads Try your child with some chicken and salad ingredients with nuts or a tuna salad. These are some of the popular choices with kids.

Cheese Slices of cheese are a great favorite together with mini tomatoes or pineapple

Protein Kids often enjoy a cold piece of roast chicken, a hard-boiled egg or some lean rolled ham.

To drink You can't go wrong with plenty of fresh water. In summer keep it cool with a thermos. If you have more time, fresh fruit juice or a smoothly are also good choices.

As a school mom who has packed thousands of lunches, let me offer you some tips for quick lunch bag ideas:

Organize your kitchen so lunch gear is easy to find. This means having one cupboard where you keep your insulated lunch boxes, stainless steel water bottles, thermos, reusable containers, plastic cutlery, etc. Get reusable containers for items like pears or plums, which tend to get squished in bags. Not only will the kids refuse to eat the fruit, it will make a mess in the bag that you will have to clean. Involve your kids in making lunches. The older they are - the more they should help with packing their own lunches. They are more likely to eat what you give them if they had a say in what is packed. Ask your kids what they like and don't like, and plan your shopping list accordingly (provided they have selected healthy alternatives). Buy and prepare ahead of time. Wash and cut veggies, or buy bite size ones - like baby carrots, grapes, cherry tomatoes or pre-cut veggies. Cut cheese into cubes; hard boil some eggs, pre-cut fruits. Have healthy snacks, like whole wheat crackers, granola bars, dried fruit, trail mix, etc. in the snack cupboard. These tend to keep longer, so you always have some healthy snacks on hand when you don't have time to run out to the grocery store. Buy individually wrapped items that are ready to throw in the bag, or get little baggies or reusable containers to hold snack items. Make extra food at dinnertime and keep leftovers to heat in the morning and pack in a thermos. Foods that work really well are pasta, chilli, soups, stew, etc. Throw in a whole wheat roll, some pita wedges or crackers, and you have a meal. (Don't forget to add fruits and veggies for snacks). Leftovers from meals can also be frozen and used for future lunches. Prepare what you can the night before, and avoid foods that are messy, have a strong odour or get mushy. Neither you nor your child will be happy if most of the lunch ends up in the garbage. Planning and organization are the keys to packing lunches that your kids will love.

To best fight headlice infestations it is imperative that it be treated properly from the beginning. Treat the hair and carefully remove all the nits from the hair shaft with a specially designed comb. Always vacuum the carpet and furniture in your home immediately after treatment, and you will also want to wash all bedding and clothes in hot water. Soak combs, brushes and other hair items in very hot water, or completely discard them and buy the items new. Aside from these steps, you may want to let all people you, or your family has been in contact with, know that there was a headlice infestation and that they should check to ensure that they do not have them. This will help to eliminate the possibility that the headlice will be passed back and forth between people who are frequently in each other’s company. If you have children in daycare or school, call and let them know that your child was exposed to headlice. Another very important step is to retreat the hair after a week. This will help to rid the head of any newly hatched lice; in addition, keep checking at least every other day for a reoccurring infestation, even after the second treatment. Also speak with your healthcare provider about what you can do to eliminate headlice.
